Guido maintains his story until the
end when, in the chaos caused by American advance, he told his son to stay in a
sweatbox until everybody has left. It is a part of the game that if he
succeeds, the tank will be his. While Guido’s son was in a safe place, he tried
to look for Dora but was not successful and ends up being caught by a Nazi
guard. He was taken away by the guard and when they come to pass the sweatbox
where his son could clearly see them, he made his son laugh for the last time
by imitating the guard as if the two of them were marching around together. He showed
that his love for his son was complete until the end.
The next morning, peace was
observed all over the place. Giosue came out of the sweatbox and when he looked
around, he saw an American tank liberating the place. He thought he won the
game because he was even able to ride on it when the American allowed him to
and helped him in looking for his mother. He was reunited with his mother not
knowing that his father was killed.
Years later, he realized all of his
father’s sacrifices for him. And that those sacrifices were the reason that he
is still alive today. He learned about the undying and complete love of his
father for him.
The whole story was narrated by an
older Giosue recalling his father’s story.
